The Nintendo Wii burned bright and fast, outshining all other video game consoles for a few years until the library was overrun with mini-game collections and motion-controlled junk, but there was a small window when various publishers tried their hardest to create and market edgy, even violent games for the platform. Most of those titles flopped and became footnotes in history, but one that had staying power was 2007's No More Heroes which told the tale of a young man with a "beam katana" who found himself accidentally murdering his way through the most powerful assassins alive.
This week on Retronauts, Bob invites YouTube's Matt McMuscles (who offers inside knowledge on testing the game) and illustrator Maddie Copp (who just really, really loves protagonist Travis Touchdown) onto the program to discuss No More Heroes and its creator who was elevated into the spotlight via its success, Suda51.
Description: After more than a decade in game development, enigmatic creator Suda 51 had his American debut with Killer 7, but 2007 would bring about his first mainstream splash with No More Heroes. This series launched on the Wii when it was still white hot, and managed to distill the off-the-wall and often alienating ideas of Suda into a personality-driven action game. Nearly 13 years after we first met Travis Touchdown, just where has the series been, and where is it headed with its upcoming third game? On this episode, join Bob Mackey, Maddie Copp, and Matt McMuscles as the crew delves deep into the Garden of Madness to discover what makes this offbeat series so compelling.
