This is our last (free) episode of 2021, but we're already looking ahead to 2022 and the many anniversaries that lie ahead—er, behind us. You know, on the 2s.
1972 saw the dawn of the first video game to become a legit cultural phenomenon as Pong taught the world that ping pong tables could be replaced by CRTs. Pong practically invented the idea of an arcade hit, only to then become a hit in living rooms thanks to its many, many ports (both licensed and otherwise).
A decade later, arcades were red hot and a number of stone-cold classics made their debut, both original titles (Joust!) and some of the earliest sequels to already popular games (Ms. Pac-Man!). Video games were so big, they even made it to the big screen in Disney's Tron.
In this week's episode, host Jeremy Parish and guests Ben Elgin, Benj Edwards, and new Retronauts East arrival Jared Petty share their collective expertise on the games that turn 50 and 40 years old in 2022. Look forward to more calendar-based episodes very soon!
Description: Jeremy Parish, Ben Elgin, Jared Petty, and Benj Edwards greet 2022 by looking back to the major events of gaming 40 and 50 years ago. (Naturally, this episode only covers about half the planned content as we dive deep into the medium's pivotal events.)
