Retronauts Episode 726: Final Fantasy Tactics Revisited

Ivalice in Remakeland

Final Fantasy and I go way back—all the way back to the original NES game in fact—and I've spent recent years playing catch up and filling in the gaps in my record. Turns out the non-Mystic Quest Final Fantasys on SNES were indeed quite good!

Low on my list, however, was Final Fantasy Tactics. Sure, it's a Final Fantasy game, but it doesn't look or play like the traditional RPGs in the series. It didn't help that Final Fantasy Tactics arrived in America months after Final Fantasy VII basically redefined the JRPG as we knew it.

So I'm excited that Final Fantasy Tactics has a new, accessible version on modern hardware and I'm doubly excited that Jeremy Parish, Kaye Ross, John Learned, and frequent Retronauts cover artist Greg Melo got together to record this podcast celebrating the game's return to prominence. Just between you and me, I think this squad might reuinite and record a second episode because they had so much to say; is that OK with y'all?

Description: Jeremy Parish, Kaye Ross, John Learned, and cover artist Greg Melo swear fealty to Lord Matsuno and return to the fray to revisit the isometric battlefields of Final Fantasy Tactics in light of its recent remake as well as [gestures expansively]
