Retronauts Episode 369: Godzilla Part 1
SKREEONK
I'm old enough to be comfortable liking the things that I like, and I'm wise enough to admit when I am wrong. For many years, even before moving to Japan, I was well aware of the Godzilla franchise, but I naively dismissed the whole idea as "silly." Turns out all I had to do was sit down and watch the original 1954 film in its entirety to realize this well-received motion picture is Good, Actually.
Funnily enough though, a lot of Godzilla movies are silly, but that's not a reason to reject them, either. Godzilla movies can be about almost anything—many of them contain topical, political commentary—but they all contain human beings pretending to be giant monsters which is...well, it's not not silly, but I also find it very charming.
So I, Diamond Feit, was very pleased to sneak my way onto a podcast with Jeremy, Matt Alt, and Bill Mudron where the four of us explained how we came to know the world-famous giant lizard and why he matters. That conversation took a while, so long that we didn't have time to get to Godzilla's direct impact on video games. But that will come, because Godzilla (or a legally-distinct giant lizard) has appeared in many, many video games.
Description: Jeremy Parish summons Diamond Feit, Matt Alt,and Bill Mudron to help destroy (or maybe just commemorate) destroy all monsters with a look back at the cultural origins of the king of kaiju, Godzilla—a beast (and topic) too big for a single episode!
