Retronauts Episode 413: Green Mario Gaiden

He's green, he's a Mario, and he's got his own story

Ever look up the phrase "second banana?" It's a curious one, as banana lovers such as myself will tell you that bananas lack any ordinal qualities as all of them are equally delicious. Google says the term comes from the vaudeville era (alongside "top banana") which makes about as much sense as any other suggestion.

This week's episode is not about fruit or vaudeville but it is about two men with mustaches who could easily be mistaken for comedians of that era. We've delved into the Mario universe of characters before on Retronauts, and we've talked about the Luigi's Mansion series, but today we are talking about Luigi himself. How did this Mario clone become his own man? What kind of man is he? And what does his history of video game appearances tell us about him?

Joining Jeremy and Bob this week are frequent guests Henry Gilbert (of Talking Simpsons) and Stuart Gipp (of numerous other shows). That's four people right there who just might neatly align with the four characters in Super Mario Bros. 2—but which ones? You'll have to tune in to find out!

Description: Having explored the legacies and games of the rest of the primary Super Mario franchise cast, Jeremy Parish, Bob Mackey, Henry Gilbert, and Stuart Gipp gather together to wrap it up by talking about, uhh, that one guy. The green one. Whatshisname.
