Retronauts Episode 576: Pitfall, the Later Years
The series leaves Atari hardware behind
I first experienced the majesty of video games on the Atari 2600 and one of the games I remember most from that era is Pitfall!—not shouting, by the way, the original title includes the exclamation mark. While most other games on the console either adapted existing arcade hits or offered arcade-like experiences, Pitfall! dropped players into a (relatively) large space and said "hey kid, take a look around."
I'll stop romanticizing the video game Pitfall! because Jeremy Parish, Kevin Bunch, and Stuart Gipp already talked about it and its direct sequel in a Patreon-exclusive episode last month. This week's episode covers later games in the series, one that stretches well beyond the confines of the VCS. Better hardware didn't necessarily lead to better games though!
Description: Jeremy Parish, Stuart Gipp, and Kevin Bunch dig in the underbrush to find the games in the Pitfall! series that its original creator had no involvement with. From the infamous Super Pitfall to the cartoon-like Pitfall: The Lost Expedition, it's all here.
