Retronauts Episode 675: Shinobi Mission 1

Eliminating every terrorist from A to ZEED

The ninja. Nature's perfect killing machine. Nigh invisible, no security system can keep them from their prey. The only thing that stops a ninja is another ninja—or guns, or knives, or Spider-Man. Yes, we're talking Shinobi on this week's podcast, Sega's one-time voluminous series of ninja video games. Consider this conversation the first half of a longer chat as we only manage to clear the franchise's arcade origins and early 90s output this time around. Indeed, since this recording Sony and Sega announced a new game coming this summer, ensuring more Shinobi patter in the future.

As a resident of Japan, Diamond Feit (hi!) had to host this initial episode so we could get into the background of the name Shinobi and how it relates to ninja; during this segment our European guests Stuart Gipp and Thomas Ni©kel politely sit and listen. Oh, and as mentioned in the podcast, here's an archived link to Yutaka Sugano's interview with a Brazillian gaming outlet for insight into his role in creating the original game.

Description: With the series poised for a comeback in 2025, Diamond Feit, Stuart Gipp, and Thomas Nickel uncover the secrets of the ninja in this first podcast about Sega's Shinobi games.
