Retronauts Episode 762: Silent Hill Cinematic Universe
We have once again entered the world of la survie d'horreur
We got a movie. The name on the credits said Christophe Gans. A hip director's name…It's ridiculous, couldn't possibly be true. And yet that's what happened 20 years this month when Silent Hill debuted in movie theaters, a (relatively) big-budget adaptation of Konami's survival horror classic. Is the movie itself a classic? That's what we discuss on the podcast this week!
Host Diamond Feit welcomes back resident Silent Hill expert Jess O'Brien alongside esteemed cartoonist KC Green (who also provides this episode's outstanding cover art). Together we lay out the many cinematic influences of Silent Hill, run down the three movies based upon Silent Hill, and reflect on how the game series adopted certain elements from its own adaptations.
A few things I wanted to link to/clarify from our conversation:
- Here's a fan-made Letterboxd list of movies with Silent Hill energy
- Jess believes this Madonna video for "Nothing Really Matters" also has Silent Hill energy
- I mention a Paul W.S. Anderson film but forget the title. It is In The Lost Lands.
- The Japanese horror filmmaker who comes up late in the show is named Koji Shiraishi.
Description: Lights, camera, Pyramid Head! Diamond Feit, Jess O'Brien, and KC Green analyze Silent Hill's cinematic roots and breakdown all three Silent Hill movies—including the recent Return to Silent Hill.
