Kickstarter Kompilation: August 2026 edition
Undead visions and down-under legends
Hey hey, I'm in New York by now but through the magic of content management these words I wrote back in Japan are ready for you. As a general rule we recommend only backing crowdfunding campaigns if you feel comfortable with your own security and stability. We have no insider information or financial interest in any of these projects (unless noted otherwise) and no one at Retronauts has been compensated for including anything on this page. To the best of my ability I have not (and never will) endorse any campaign built around AI-generated assets.
Coralina: ILLACRIMO (ends August 7 estimated reward date December 2026)
For two straight games, the saga of Coralina has embraced a blend of graphical styles to depict an otherworldly odyssey through the afterlife. In this third and supposedly final chapter, Coralina finally goes to hell. There's a demo on Steam if you want to sample the inferno for yourself.
And One More (ends August 10 estimated reward date August 2026!)
I've been on a real horror kick lately, especially Japanese horror and especially especially lo-fi Japanese horror, so this project set in that most cursed of locations—a school after hours—caught my eye. The developers aim to weave together seven mysteries on campus that players can experience as they explore the grounds.
Dead Rose (ends August 23 estimated reward date December 2026)
People make video games for all sorts of reasons and sometimes those reasons can be somber. In this case, the creator of Dead Rose seeks to channel their grief for their late father through an "action RPG" set "in the world of spirits."
Region Locked (ends August 29 estimated reward date December 2027)
We're all guilty of our biases, and here on Retronauts that means a focus on games from large markets like the US, Japan, and Europe. Region Locked will present an oral history of Australian games and developers over the course of six hour-long documentary-style episodes.
Aretha Reunion Project (ends August 31 estimated reward date summer 2027)
While released exclusively in Japan, you may have heard of the Aretha RPG series from the 90s. Today, original developers Japan Art Media and publisher Yanoman want to bring the older games to new audiences on modern platforms and—if they can meet all their goals—continue the Aretha franchise with a brand new game. For now their sights are set on rereleasing the Aretha Game Boy trilogy by next summer.
