A spooky Amiga classic for Halloween

Dare you enter the Waxworks?

Halloween is, of course, a good time to go delving into the world of horror-based games and find something that could be considered scary -- whether it be some film tie-in, or a celebrated classic from years past. This is actually the first serious Halloween-themed vid that I've done, as it goes -- and as ever, I fancied doing something a little different. And so, from the depths of the Amiga, we have Waxworks by Horrorsoft. As ever, the video can be watched here:

Waxworks is a dungeon-crawler type game consisting of four separate stories, all interlinked by featuring one of your evil twin brother ancestors -- you must go to each world and defeat said relation in order to break the family's curse, put upon you by a witch hundreds of years ago. You'll fight Jack the Ripper in Victorian London, destroy Lovecraftian plant-based nightmares in the Mines, take on an evil priest of Anubis in the Pyramids and so on. The classic dungeon crawling style abounds, meaning that if you've played anything like Eye of the Beholder, Dungeon Master or what have you, you'll be familiar with how this game works.

Waxworks, more than anything else, is famed for the grisly nature of its deaths -- the one shown in the thumbnail might be nasty, but it's also probably the lightest example. Whenever you fall victim to a trap or succumb to an enemy, you can bet that you'll be treated to a gruesome end in picture form. This dedication to squick is something that attracted me to the game in the first place, thanks to a video that showed all of the ways that you could die in the game -- as brutal as that is, there's nothing quite like experiencing them for yourself.

And of course, there had to be some gimmick for this video -- it's Halloween, so naturally I had to go ahead, paint my face and walk around town. Some have said that I look like a Juggalo or a member of some KISS tribute group, and I don't suppose that the rest of what I'm wearing particularly goes well with the face...but hey-ho, it was certainly a fun thing to do. Turns out people don't really notice, even if you look like you're going to the Gathering and looking for your last bottle of Faygo. After years of watching a nasty little YouTube video, it was nice to finally play the game and make a proper piece on it, and hopefully you enjoy the results!
