Introducing...the You-Tube round up!
A dive into various highlights from the past week in gaming YouTube-dom.
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the YouTube round-up! As a creator of various YouTube vids, I tend to post my videos up quite a lot on here...however, now it's time to throw it back and post other people's! This weekly feature will cover the best and brightest vids from the past seven days on gaming YouTube, with a focus mainly on quality edited stuff. Don't hesitate to throw your own suggestions for channels that should be kept an eye on in the comments! With all that said, let's get down to business.
- That glorious man, Dr. Sparkle, has released the 52nd episode of Chrontendo -- the series that aims to chronologically categorise and critique every single NES and Famicom game. Videos like this don't come along very often, and so they're usually required watching. This installment's featured game is influential cult survival horror RPG Sweet Home, and the movie it was based on also gets an outing.
- DJ Slope himself, Daniel Ibbertson, has released another one of his Complete History videos -- and this one's for Sega Swirl, a very obscure free puzzle game series that appeared on the Dreamcast.
- The Slopester did another video this week too that's significantly larger -- a sprawling 60-minute plus Complete History on Metroid. Needless to say, it's a bang-up job. Features cameos from Larry Bundy, Nostalgia Nerd, and yours truly.
- While not exactly video games, Techmoan is one of the greatest channels on YouTube and you should probably be watching him. He's released a RetroTech video on a strange Japanese gadget called the Panapic -- I'll leave the description of what it does to his dulcet Northern tones.
- Top Hat Gaming Man is one of the more controversial figures from British Games YouTube, a proud man who certainly enjoys putting the world to rights. Here, he makes a case for the Gamecube not being a retro console.
- Naturally a few Halloween-themed vids have been doing the rounds this week. Stop Skeletons From Fighting has Re: Certified the almighty Silent Hill 2 as a classic, and quite rightly too.
- Similarly, the almighty Lazy Game Reviews covered the Horrorsoft classic Personal Nightmare. This makes a nice companion piece to my own video on Waxworks, although sadly Clint didn't paint himself up like a juggalo for it.
- Over the past few months, speedrunner Summoning Salt has been turning heads with his in-depth, Jon Bois-esque coverage of the World Record Progression for various games. His latest on the utterly broken Donkey Kong 64 is another keeper.
- Liana Kerzner has released the first episode of Lady Bits, a Kickstarter-funded show which takes a look at women in video games, with a fair bit of humour and perspectives chucked into the mix. Episode 1 covers the difference between the new and old versions of Lara Croft.
- The ever-popular Guru Larry said hello you, and delivered a somewhat depressing video on 10 companies that EA bought, and then destroyed. A lot of famous faces here.
- And finally, Paul Jenkinson released Episode #66 of the Spectrum Show, a monthly magazine program that features looks at Speccy hardware, classic games of old and new, and what's going on in the past and present of the Spectrum scene. This is essential monthly viewing, as far as I'm concerned.
And that'll do for this week! As ever, I hope you enjoy this look at the best of YouTube from the past seven days, and hopefully you get to catch up on anything that you've missed over the weekend. Be sure to leave your own recommendations in the comments, and tune in next week for another look at the best from the scene!
