A look at the workaday 16-bit world

The generic sports games that kept the console wars simmering.

This week's video feature delves into two genres that have already appeared on Super NES: Baseball and golf. True Golf Classics: Waialae Country Club sets itself apart from HAL's Hole in One Golf, and Super Baseball Simulator 1.000 isn't quite the same game as Super Bases Loaded. But only barely in each case. If you know these sports, you can perfectly predict the broad strokes of these two entries in those respective genres. And fair enough; there's only so much you can do with these sports before the game you're making no longer resembles the sport in question (as we'll see next week). But, still... these are the games no one ever goes back to in this day and age.

I'd like to reveal some sort of fascinating hidden element to these games to cement them as hidden, all-time classics. But that would be a lie. Sometimes, old games are just old games. They do what they're supposed to, and not a bit more.
